Asphalt Shingle Contractor

Your roof is one of the most critical components of your home. Obviously, part of this is the fact that it’s your first and last line of defense against the elements. It prevents rain and snow and wind from getting in, it keeps your climate control contained, and it protects everyone and everything you love.

But, there are other things to consider as far as roof importance goes. A badly damaged or poorly maintained roof can have lasting consequences beyond the immediate and practical things you may be thinking of. Such a shambled roof can result in a drastically reduced resale value, ruined curb appeal, and in the worst cases, your home being condemned by building inspectors.

Along with this, damage caused to a roof can rapidly spread to other parts of your house, such as mold spreading to your walls from water damage etc.

Obviously, as a sensible homeowner, you take great care of every aspect of your house, including your roof. You have it inspected at least annually, and every time there’s severe weather. But, no matter how well built your roof is, and how much care you take of it, sooner or later, you’re either going to have to repair or replace it. Nothing in this world last forever.

In most cases, this is going to result in the installation of asphalt shingles. They are one of the most popular, most affordable, most practical roofing materials out there. This has been the case for quite some time, as when you imagine a generic roof, these shingles are what you generally picture.

You, of course, would never settle for anything but the best roofing contractor to handle your roof replacement or installation. Why would you put the fate of your home in the hands of anyone but the most competent? But, simple technical know-how isn’t the only thing that defines a great roofing contractor. You want someone who doesn’t just understand the process but understands the materials the same way an artist understands his canvas.

After all, your home is a work of art, isn’t it?

At JDT Construction, we understand asphalt shingle like no one else. We’ve been installing this material on roofs for decades, and we know all there is to know about asphalt shingles – from the sciences and manufacturing all the way up to proper installation, care, and damage prevention.

Types of Asphalt Shingles

It may come as a surprise that there is quite a bit of variety when it comes to these shingles. It goes above and beyond just differences in color, or dimensions of individual squares.

There are actually three basic classifications for asphalt shingles, with a lot of variety within each one.

Three-tab shingles are the most economical, and therefore most popular style asphalt shingle available. They are cut along the bottom uniformly to look like three individual pieces. Most standard looking roofs you see featuring asphalt shingles are probably using these.
Despite being something of a budget material, these shingles are actually pretty tough and look pretty good. They don’t hold up as well as heavier, dimensional shingles, but that doesn’t mean you can’t get some very tough, long-lasting three-tab shingles.

Dimensional asphalt shingles are thicker, sturdier and heavier. These give the appearance of some texture, and varying thickness along the surface of a roof. If you’ve seen in asphalt shingle roof with a very sharp sense of contrast and depth to it, these are how it was achieved.

Dimensional shingles are considerably more durable, and a bit more expensive. However, their unique look and durability to make them increasingly more desirable. This goes especially for people living in areas with very strong winds, or other severe weather where three-tab shingles are more susceptible to damage.

Finally, premium asphalt shingles are in a class all their own. These utilize advanced materials and manufacturing processes to mimic other materials, and they do so rather well. Using premium shingles, you can imitate a slave, would or other material roof and it would be indistinguishable from a distance.

Given the advanced materials utilized to achieve these looks, you get the added benefit of better insulation, stronger UV deflection and more resistance to wind and impact. These are of course, on average, the most expensive asphalt shingles you can get. But when you consider the aesthetic diversity combined with the advanced durability and other benefits, they’re definitely worth it if you can work the budget to make them happen.

Advantages of Asphalt Shingles

Asphalt shingles are so common and popular for a reason. On average, the most expensive premium asphalt shingles are still cheaper than the materials they imitate. Also, due to the way they are manufactured and constructed, they are on average far more resistant to impact, severe weather, and other problems.

Stone, wood, and clay shingles are far more susceptible to damage from falling tree branches, hail, and severe winds. These materials also have a tendency to break down more quickly from UV exposure. In some cases, they also have a stronger tendency towards growing algae and moss as well.

In some cases, installing the proper classic shingle can even earn you a discount on your home insurance policy, and in asphalt roof has been known to last between 15 to 30 years on average. So, given their durability, affordability, and longevity, it’s no small wonder asphalt shingles are the choice so many people make.
